After surviving a violent crash on the opening stage of the race, Brent finished his fourth career Tour de France Sunday while helping his BMC Racing teammate Richie Porte to a fifth-place finish.

Sunday marked his eighth finish of a grand tour: four Tours de France (2010, 2011, 2013 and this year), three Giro d’Italias (2010, 2014 and 2015) and one Vuelta a España (2012). In one of Brent’s three other Tour de France appearances, he helped teammate Cadel Evans win the race in 2011.

“That’s the Tour de France, pushing yourself to the absolute physical and mental limit,” Brent said. “I definitely did that. I started kind of on a rough note but I had awesome support from the team. I am proud to be finishing in Paris with a great group of guys.”

Brent was one of 174 riders who finished the race – an all-time record. He was also one of five Americans to start and finish. Teammate Tejay van Garderen was highest-placed of the quintet, in 29th. Brent finished 117th, 3:57:49 behind Chris Froome (Team Sky), who won his third Tour de France title. Brent’s best finish at the Tour de France came in 2013, when he placed 91st.
