Brent Bookwalter’s North Carolina Community Needs Your Help to Recover from Hurricane Helene
ong after the friends and family lost are laid to rest, electric and phone lines are fully restored, after clean water is established and roads are rebuilt, the communities of North Carolina devastated by Hurricane Helene last month will still face a long road to a semblance of normality.
The damage to Western North Carolina is severe, and it will take years to rebuild all the infrastructure that was lost in a matter of hours. But even when the essential infrastructure is fully rebuilt, the immediate needs are tended to, and the news cycle has moved on, the communities here will be far from what they once were.
Former pro cyclist Brent Bookwalter, who has called Western North Carolina home for over 20 years and currently lives near Black Mountain, fears that the things that attracted him and so many people to this place won’t be rebuilt, at least not without a concerted effort by locals.
